The World House Choir is proud to once again lift our voices at the Yellow Springs Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration on Monday, January 19, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the John Bryan Community Center, 100 Dayton St. in YS.
We will open the program with the beloved anthem Lift Every Voice and Sing. The celebration will culminate in an empowering, participatory moment as the entire audience is invited to sing along to Bernice Johnson Reagon’s Ella’s Song.…
We who believe in freedom cannot rest.
The morning’s program also features the presentation of the Peace Maker Award to Florence Randolph, inspiring student essays from Yellow Springs youth, and a keynote address by Kevin Powell, one of the most influential political, cultural, literary, and hip-hop voices in America today. Powell’s work has appeared in CNN.com, Esquire, Ebony, The Huffington Post, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, ESPN.com, and Vibe Magazine, where he spent many years as a senior writer interviewing figures as diverse as Tupac Shakur and Colin Powell.
In 2025, Powell and his wife, Evangeline Lawson, produced and directed When We Free the World, a documentary examining Black manhood and fatherhood. A native of Jersey City, New Jersey, Powell was raised by a single mother in extreme poverty and went on to study at Rutgers University through the New Jersey Educational Opportunity Fund.
Join us for a moving, music-filled celebration of Dr. King’s legacy, community, and our ongoing work of justice and peace.
ALL ARE WELCOME
